The History Group August 2009 update: Ursula Scott writes: Most of the work of the History Group is centred on the translation and transcription of Norton Manorial Court records onto computer. We are extremely lucky in that Norton has this historical gem : hundreds of pages of court records running from 1244 into the 20th century. For the first part of the project, the Group is transcribing Manorial Court records from 1244 to 1470. The records were written in medieval Latin, but we have a handwritten English translation (lodged with the Hertford Archives) and we are putting this onto computer using 'Word', mirroring as far as possible the original Latin formats. We have already completed this work for the period to the end of the reign of King Henry III in 1272. We are now working on records in the time of King Edward I and Edward II, taking us to 1327. Each member of the Group is transcribing into 'Word' the English documents relating to 2 pages of Latin text, by referring to photographs of both. We are looking for volunteers to help with this work. All of us are amateurs, so detailed knowledge of Latin is not required, just an ability to read handwriting and type text into 'Word'. If you wish to volunteer for this work, please respond to ursula.scott@btinternet.com, and we will get you started!
