The History Group is embarking on a major project to transcribe all of the Manorial Court records of Norton into digital form. Ultimately it is planned that the records will be accessible on the internet or in paper form at the Hertford Archives (HALS) or in Letchworth Library. The Manorial Court records run from 1244 in the reign of Henry III until August 1916 (signed off by Ebenezer Howard), with only a few missing years; an almost unique sequence. However, up until 1714 the records are in medieval Latin and NCAG need grant funding to pay for the cost of their translation. These documents are reproduced courtesy of HALS
Update of the progress of the History Group....David Croft 670 years of Manorial Court records in one room! When History Group members visited the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS) library in Hertford in August to work on the Norton Manorial Court records they were allocated a separate room for the task. Sue Flood, the Hertfordshire County Archivist, proudly declared that it was probably the first time she had brought together for display all 670 years of manorial court records for one village. The History Group was there to photograph samples of records which would need to be translated from medieval Latin to English. Sue helped us measure and record the number of pages which would need to be translated. As can be seen in the photographs below some of them are in need of repair. Others will require much skill in translating, not least because of the poor handwriting! NCAG History Group applies for grants for Manorial Records translation The total cost of the project is about £20,000 and funding is being requested from The Heritage Lottery Fund, Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation and North Herts District Council.
