Norton Community Archaeology Group at Norton Walkabout Test pits were dug at 90 Norton Road and 15 Church Lane. In both test pits, there was evidence that there had been Roman habitation nearby, hints at early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) domestic activity and more-or-less continuous occupation from at least the fourteenth century. The material in the garden of 15 Church Lane was mostly hillwash (sediment literally washed downhill!) incorporating domestic refuse, some burnt. At 90 Norton Road, there was a mid-twentieth-century gravel surface, sealing late Victorian/early Garden City material on top of the footings for a demolished structure or the footings for a vanished floor. The finds were mostly ceramics with a date range Roman to twentieth century. Once the finds have been washed they can be identified the archaeologist will do a basic quantification. The Group will publish an evaluation report which will appear on the website. Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews
