On Saturday April 28th '07, Kat Maddison - an Archaeology graduate and History teacher will be leading a group in order to undertake an audit of the graves adjoining St Nicholas' Church, Norton.
On Saturday 21st April, a small number of the Norton Community Archaeology Group, led by Mick James, but watched over by Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews (NHDC Archaeology Officer) and Bob Lancaster (LGCHF), worked with 3 members of The Welwyn Archaeological Society to perform a geophysical survey of Church Field, Norton. The survey was condiucted using a resisitivity meter. Starting in the south-west corner the group laid out a number of 20 metre square grids with the sides aligned to the cardinal compass points. Starting at 10.00 a.m. and working through until 3.30 p.m. 11 grids in all were completed representing about 20% of the field. The grids crossed several of the earthwork features in the field including the hollow way. We are now awaiting the results. Interest is mixed with caution, however, as the conditions were very dry when we conducted the exercise. The best results with resistance meters occurs when the ground is damp so we must 'wait and see'. Further surveys will be conducted during the coming months although none are definitely planned at the moment.

On Saturday April 21st we will be beginning the Geophysics of the Church Field. This is seen as an ongoing project lasting several 'sessions' starting with the area which we hope to 'dig' in the summer. Several members of the group have volunteered to help with this huge undertaking which will provide us with valuable starting information prior to our excavations.
