The importance of the Norton Community Archaeology Project has been recognised by the NHDC (in addition to their sponsorship of us). They have constructed a new display about us, our work and some of the artefacts that have been discovered during the Summer Dig, in Chris Hobbs' back garden and the allotments near the Church. If you are interested then take a look in the Archaeology Gallery at Letchworth Museum in the Broadway.
Mystery Press Cutting 20th December 2007
Robert Lancaster (Curator of The Garden City Heritage Museum), followed up a recent talk given by Deborah Giles' . Robert spoke about 'Norton within the Garden City' and revealed a wealth of information which helped us to see the impact that the 'Garden City' has made on the village of Norton. His power-point-based account contained maps, photographs and illustrations which all provided a fascinating insight into the village as we know it today. Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews (Dig Director) spoke to the NCAG on November 26th. He gave us a detailed account of not only the results of the Summer 2007 in Church Field but also a fascinating insight into his interpretation of the discoveries made. Keith not only gave an explanation of the findings from an archaeological and layman perspective, he revealed the theories which he would like to test in order to reveal more about the archaeology of Norton and its historical roots. All this is an exciting build-up to the dig which we hope to undertake in 2008!!

David Hillelson (
Heritage Network, Letchworth) led a seminar on the 'Recording of Standing Buildings' to a small NCAG group recently. What we learnt has enabled us to start our own 'recording' programme with a view to selecting buildings of interest within the village of Norton and publishing our findings. We are grateful to David for giving up his time in order to instruct us.
Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews the NHDC Archaeology Officer and Dig Director has made an appeal for information on the
attached press clip from around 1910 Keith says....' although there is no indication of source (I suspect that it was the Letchworth Citizen, which was established in 1906). I'm intrigued by it and appeal for information: has anybody else heard about it? do they know what the exact date of the cutting might be? do they know where the site was and where was being developed around this time? I think it's the west side of Norton Way North, backing on to Norton Common, but I wouldn't like to swear to it!' Can you help? If so, then please e-mail
